چکیده
Peter Rehling is professor and chair of biochemistry at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Göttingen and the director of the Department for Biochemistry II. His laboratory studies the biogenesis of mitochondria, in particular the molecular mechanism by which proteins are translocated across the mitochondrial membranes and how they assemble into membrane protein complexes. In all cellular life forms, membranes establish the physical barrier that prevents random mixing of molecules. Mechanisms must exist, however, for the transport of select molecules across membranes, and in the case of eukaryotes, for the transport of select molecules from one membrane-bound organelle to another. These types of transport reactions are executed by cellular proteins that either span membranes to create selective pores or bind to the cytosolic surfaces of membranes to create transport vesicles.
